When we moved to Vancouver Island a few months ago, I asked people what winter here was like. Not bad, they said. It rains, of course, but rarely snows, maybe a little in January, but when it does snow, it's just a light dusting that melts away by the next day. Uh-huh. Lately, though, I'd been wondering about all those ads for snowblowers in the newspaper flyers. I mean, you don't invest in a snowblower unless you plan to blow some serious snow. Well, it snowed over the weekend. Here's what that "light dusting" looked like. And it's only November...

It's now Wednesday night and it's still snowing. Howling winds. Ice on everything. Light dusting, eh? Could it be that the locals here have a bit of fun pulling the collective legs of newcomers or do they just live in a dreamworld of delusional denial?

On the bright side, we haven't lost power like many of the surrounding villages, we've got a great woodstove and plenty of wood, a good supply of food, two kilos of French Roast coffee, good stuff to smoke, and a full bottle of fine oude genever. And we don't have to go out because we don't have Real Jobs. All things considered, life could be worse. And the snow is really, really pretty...

I can't wait to see what that "light dusting" in January is going to look like...

The Angel

I awoke in the middle of the night to find an angel standing at the foot of my bed. She was incredibly beautiful, with enormous wings that glowed purest white, softly illuminating her exquisite face. She stood there in silence, looking down on me with an enigmatic expression. Then she threw up all over my bed. When she recovered she blushed. I'm sorry, she said in a voice like bells made of light and honey, I just couldn't help it. I get airsick when I fly.

Workin' on it...

Ok - so now I've created a nifty graphic to replace the stock Blogger header and I've added links to the blogs of some friends of mine. I still don't have much to say, but I'm working on it. Meanwhile, I'll keep on tweaking the HTML so at least this place looks good. Anything to avoid writing, which is the real reason for doing this blog. Maybe next time.

Oh, no, not another blog...

After years of dedicated resistance, I've given in to trendiness and started a blog. Rest assured, however, that this blog will be about as far away from trendy as it gets.

Here's something to think about while you wait for the next posting:

Black velvet in the sunshine is 10,000 times brighter than snow under a full moon, and wet silk is the best cure for Full Moon Fever.
